Trees can be distiguished from shrubs based on size and growing habit. Trees attain a mature height of at least 13 feet high while shrubs grow shorter than this. At a height of 4.5 feet above the ground, trees have a truck diameter of 3 inches. as far as growth habit is concerned, shrubs have many woody stems growing from the base of the plant. Trees have one erect trucnk. The similarity between trees and shrubs are that both have woody stems and branches. Photosynthesis therefore occurs through the leaves.
Differences between trees and shrubs
- Trees grow more than 20 feet, at 4.5 feet above the ground the trunk diameter is at least 2 inches. Shrubs grow shorter than this.
- Generally, trees have one erect trucnk from which branches grow. Shrubs on the other hand have multiple branches coming from the base of the plant.

Differences between shrubs and ground covers
From the above definitions of trees and ground covers, it follows that the ground covers are snaller than shrubs. A shrub grows from a height of one and a half feet.
