Lawn leveling aims at evening out a bumpy lawn. Leveling out an uneven lawn is achieved by top dressing and lawn rolling. Causes of a bumpy lawn are diverse. The most common causes of an uneven lawn is poor ground preparation, settling of loose soil even when ground prepartation was done well, soil erosion, digging of trenches and other human and vehicular activities on a lawn.

For an existing lawn, leveling is best done after all the grass has matted out. This reduces further damage and compaction of the underlying layers. Top dressing with soil, sand, compost, coco peat or any other suitable materials can be done.

Any leveling activity on a lawn must be done with care. This is to avoid doing more damage than good. Application of too much topdressing material at once can be detrimental to the growth of the grass. Overcompaction can also result if a very heavy roller is used during the leveling activity.

In general, any lawn leveling activity should be accompanied by aeration or aerification. This is to ensure there is sufficeint availability of air and proper water penetration in the root zone. Aeration is achieved by pencil tining or hollow tining. Hollow tining removes grass cores, which can then be allowed to decompose into the lawn.

After top dressing or during top dressing, fertilizer application is recommended. This ensures the upper root zone is sufficiently nourished following the application of the new top dressing material. The top dressing material is spread to level out a lawn. This should preferably be done after the rolling and mowing has been done.
